Steps to Reupholster a Couch

I’m enlisting the step by step process to reupholster a couch.

  • Step – 1: Measure the Fabric
The very first thing you need to do is the measurement of the fabric that you want to use to reupholster your Couch. Measure the cloth and record it in any paper or diary. While measuring the visible pieces, don’t forget to measure the hidden pieces of your couch and try to keep some extra fabric. It is not a good practice to finalize the exact measurement, it would be great if you can loosen some extra inches of fabric.
  • Step – 2: Remove the Staples
Now, the second step is to remove out all the staples that your couch cover has. You have to remove the old upholstery from it, in this process, this is the first step. Remove out all the staples carefully so that you and your couch won’t get hurt because of it. You can use pliers for it. While doing so, figure out the piece you want to reupholster first.
  • Step – 3: Remove the Old Upholstery
Now it’s time to remove the old upholstery from your couch. Start removing it from the back of the couch for easy removal. Then remove from the front side gently and notice how it is fitted and covered on the couch.
  • Step – 4: Prepare Cording
You’ll need cording on re-covering the arms of the couch. Measure the cording and cut it into exact pieces. Cut the pieces of fabric that you are going to use to reupholster your couch. Start covering your cording into it and sew it so that it can match with the overall upholstery.
  • Step – 5: Recover Your Couch
Once you get done with cording preparation, start recovering your couch. I would suggest starting from the base then recover the arms. It is a good practice. Covering of the backside should be done before the covering of the front side. Once you get done with this, give a final finished touch to it by using a dust cover and staple it. In the end, add legs to your couch and place it carefully on its position.
  • This is how you can reupholster your couch at your home on your own. You just have to take notes of the measurement of the fabric. In case of any mistake in the measurement of the fabric, you’ll face a great loss of the fabric if it won’t fit rightly.
